Too bad the warehouse at Etronics that sends out the product is not aware of this special offer from Amazon; they do not store cookbooks and burner paste and these products do not come in the box. When I spoke with them they said they were not aware of this offer from Amazon. I accepted a refund of my shipping costs. Etronics were very customer friendly and responded promptly and courteously to my questions.

I am very pleased with this little teapot which I am using everyday. I have not had it very long so cannot rate longevity. It can be heated empty on top of the stove while boiling water in a tea kettle. It will make about l pint of tea or two cups. Inside it is enameled and so is the bottom so it is easy to wipe clean. It is small, only about 5"x5"x3.5"(h). The cast iron is not as heavy as in a larger pot but it has some heft. I recommend it to anyone who wants something a bit out of the ordinary.

Be careful! This fondue maker does not take normal rubbing alcohol. You will need to buy a special gelled fuel which is not available in most stores. I had to get mine online and pay an extra $15 including shipping. Also, the instructions say not to cook it in the pot itself, but rather to make the fondue on the stove in a normal pot and then transfer it to the ceramic one on the table. I spent 5 years living in Switzerland and never saw anyone do it like that! They always made it directly in the ceramic fondue maker. I can't figure out what their reasoning for this is.

(Almost) Every Monday we have a family night and this usually involves a family meeting, spiritual discussions, having some fun, and TREATS to top it all off. This has been a very great addition to our family nights.

It is easy to use. It isn't very big but since we are a small family (me, the wife, and a son) we weren't getting in each other's way too often. The food it makes was delicious. I've had other items like this before but the chocolate would burn. Yucky! This didn't do that at all. Most important, it was very easy to clean up after wards. I'm extremely happy with this dipper.

I will add my voice to those who complained about how long it takes to get ready. The first night we did this I was unaware and we didn't have anything to snack on until we were all headed for bed. In the future we planned ahead a bit more. I'm not into pre-melting so with a little bit of proper planning this turns into something quite amazing.

I'm sure there are better ones out there but the low price makes this extremely attractive. You might want something better if you do it more often (we use it once or twice a month) or you have a bigger family. But for our circumstances this was PERFECT for us.

A nice little treat maker for anyone with a sweet tooth, the Back to Basics Gourmet Treat Dipper is just what its name implies it to be: an easy way to make sweet dipped treats. Chocolate, caramel, or whatever your taste may be, the Gourmet Treat Dipper is a lovely kitchen tool that adds sweet flavor to pretzels, apples, or whatever you can think of in your quest to make treats. It's easy to use and get the hang of even if you have little talent in the kitchen, with the only real drawbacks being how hot the outside of the pot can get, and that cleaning it out could have been a bit easier to do. That aside, the Back to Basics Gourmet Treat Dipper is a handy kitchen tool for treat lovers, and makes a great gift if you know anyone interested in culinary treat making.

I figured, what the heck? and picked this up for free using the Vine program. My husband and I own an actual fondue pot, with both metal and ceramic inserts, and have enjoyed it from time to time, though not lately. I figured from the description that this would be a small gadget, not a repeat.

For starters, it's huge - don't know where I'm going to put it to live. ;)
It's basically the ceramic type electric fondue pot - it does not get hot enough to do oil and meats. The description here on amazon.com says that you can do cheese fondue, but nothing in the box mentions this.

The "back to basics" is certainly true in the instructions - more or less, they tell you nothing more than "put some chocolate in the pot and melt it" with some side things of "add some nuts or chopped candy post-dipping" - but there is certainly nothing in the way of recipes or other ideas included.

It melted 3 bags of chocolate chips quickly and well (though it was very thick, but the one good instruction was "do not add water"), which we certainly enjoyed Christmas evening with friends - dipping sugar cookies, strawberries, and apples, and drizzling the chocolate over cheescake.

However, if you are looking for any instruction at all, this falls short. We have enjoyed many rather complex cheese fondue recipes in our "real" fondue pot, and we would certainly not know this is possible with the included literature. I am, in fact, scared to try cheese fondues as the included paperwork mentions nothing about it.

I guess if you're looking to melt some chocolate cheaply, this would be a good way to go. If you're interested in anything more complex, you're certainly going to have to buy at least one recipe book along with this item.

Yes, I'll be the first to admit I'm a fondue fanatic. So of course when I saw this neat little gadget, I just had to own it. Especially since I have two children at home and using our fondue pots with an open flame have always made me nervous.
Three things I love about this Treat Dipper:
1. NO FIRE - which is a major plus in my book.
2. Easy to clean - I don't know how they do it, but just a little soap and warm water and there goes the gooey mess. I love the pour spouts to neatly dispose of the unused chocolate/cheese.
3. You can control the heat! (although it does take quite some time to get your chocolate melted - I'd suggest pre-melting.)

The only downside that I can find - which is very minor - is you are limited on apple/food sizes. You can also only dip one apple at a time when making caramel apples. I found that I had to stick with smaller fuji apples. I do have my larger fondue pots that can take it's place for larger food items, but I've really gotten to like using just this one.
One minor frustration is the flimsy dipping "forks" that come with the treat dipper. While I haven't broken them yet, they make me nervous to use. I still can't fathom how that flimsy plastic doesn't melt.

I'm impressed with the Treat Dipper enough that I'm purchasing it as a Christmas gift for several fellow fondue lovers. It's "classy" looking and fits well into the party decor. I'm also thinking of getting a second one for myself since we often entertain with fondues and I'm addicted to using this one!
UPDATE ---- July 15th, 2009
As you can see, I've been using this fantastic "fondue pot" for a while now. It still is the talked about item at all our parties. It still is easy to clean and going strong - has withstood 5 - 12 year olds and adults using it at every gathering. Amazingly, those flimsy forks haven't broken either. Granted, I don't let kids use them, but still - I'm impressed.

This treat dipper is basically a crock pot with a tapered insert designed to operate at a fairly low temperature.

I used this today to make chocolate covered strawberries. I usually do this by melting the chocolate in the microwave. The treat dipper made the process go faster, since the chocolate stays at the correct temperature all the time. The insert is fairly heavy, giving it enough mass to distribute the heat evenly.

Do not use with small children, the insert and the pot get too hot.

Insert is dishwasher safe, great after you have made a mess and the design of the top keeps most of the chocolate from dripping onto the sides.

There is still some chocolate left at the bottom that is hard to get too. You can, however, pour it out and save it to use again.

Hint: Add a small amount (half a tablespoon) of shortening (like Crisco) to your chocolate, this makes it smoother to dip and gives the finished product a shinier surface.

Some ideas for treats are included in the manual.

It does NOT get hot enough for uncooked foods (this is not a fondue pot).

This would be useful for keeping nacho cheese warm for parties. I find that my mini crock pot tends to overheat the cheese and I expect this would work well for that purpose.

If you only make treats occasionally this product is probably overkill. But if you are like me and often churn out 10 dozen chocolate covered strawberries it would be well worth the price. It would also be fun at parties.

I wasn't sure if I would find this gadget useful. I have a double boiler and I'm pretty good at melting chocolate or caramel on the stove without burning so why would I need another gadget to melt stuff? Here's what I learned:
1. This is a crockpot made by Rival, the people who really know how to make quality crockpots and slow cookers. The temperatures are low enough to keep from scorching caramel and chocolate and I would assume cheese would melt well too but I haven't tried it.
2. The "pot" is crockery and separate from the red heating base so it can be easily lifted out if you want to pour something or when you want to wash it.
3. It is funnel shaped so the extra can pool up in the bottom. This is a nice feature. As the product you have melted starts to get low, you can still dip smaller foods because the melted food is in a smaller area. Less waste.
4. The sides are wide and have pour spouts. As you lift your dipped food from the chocolate, the drips are on the crock and run back into the rest. I was a little afraid to pour with this crock because it is large and heavy but it is designed with that in mind.
5. I didn't have to stand there and stir while the chocolate (my choice for a first try) melted.
6. The dipping utensils included with the pot are close to useless. They are a soft plastic and pretty funky. Trying to clean them was difficult because the plastic has lots of nooks and crannies you can't get to. I was afraid my dishwasher would melt them.

We decided to use this as a "fondue" pot of sorts at a party and it was a big hit. We melted chocolate disks (73% cocoa) and dipped pretzels, strawberries and dried fruit. It's Super easy to clean up (except for the utensils).

I'll try to avoid giving this a star rating since I won't see it up close, and I don't know why they cancelled it on me. My initial thoughts was that this looked well designed for it's intended purpose. A cylindrical crock, even a small one like I have for cheese, is wasteful for dipping apples and such since the shape leaves caramel in the corner. The design of this is like a tapered sump, so it should be efficient.

From a distance the control looks simple and this is too be expected with a crock, only on and a couple heat settings are needed. I can't tell you how fast it heats, cause again I don't have one. What I can tell you is I had an oval crock and since this is round you won't have a problem with the lid falling in. Plus it looks like a nice small device that won't take up much counter space, and can be put away in the cupboard till next use without dedicating half a cabinet like my mixer or food processor.

Anyway that's all I can do by visual inspection, check with Amazon if they ran out of samples for vine or if they pulled this on UL concerns or other malfunctional issues. I suppose it's all right if they still list it for sale. The two star rating I had to give it is probably not representative of the product, but that's all I'll part with without seeing the product work.

Back To Basics' PC17581 Gourmet Treat Dipper is an excellent device. It's very simple to use, almost fool-proof, and has a slick design that will complement most kitchens. The model I received happened to be red, which fits in perfectly with the holiday season, especially Christmas. Unlike most of the other reviews I've read so far, I didn't do an initial test run with chocolate or caramel. I went with Velveeta cheese and a can of Wolf chili. Why? Because I (as well as my entire family) love chili cheese dip with nachos.

I must be honest and say that I was somewhat doubtful that this little dipping crock would properly heat the cheese and chili. Well, I'm happy to report that it did. The chili cheese dip reached a consistency that was perfect for dipping nachos and not being so thick that the chips would break.

Cleaning the melting pot was easy as well, with only a little elbow grease necessary to remove the cheese on the sides of the crock.

The dipper comes in three pieces: a cover, melting pot, and heating base. There are also two dipping forks provided which allow you to fully coat whatever you might be dipping.

If you enjoy dipping apples, pretzels, candies or even chips, I highly recommend the Back to Basics Gourmet Treat Dipper. It will get a lot of use this Christmas season in my home, and I'm sure it can be put to good use in your home as well.

I'm someone who is constantly baking: homemade marshmallows, cheesecake lollipops, lady fingers, a bazillion cookies, you name it. For me nothings going to take the place of a double boiler for pure efficiency and the volume I do. But there are pluses that I can see to this treat dipper.

First of all, my husband- a man who doesn't know the proper side of a spatula generally- came into the kitchen eager to join me in dipping Thanksgiving treats. He had so much fun that I just let him go to town with it and do my work for me even though he ended up with nearly as much chocolate on him as the treats and a few of the lollipops had to be sacrificed to his tummy along the way. For social situations I can see this being excellent. One thing to note if you have kids though, the entire appliance-especially the ceramic- gets pretty darn hot so protect those little hands along with your own.

I can also see that dipping long items, like pretzels, would be much easier in the tall ceramic than in the shallower double boiler method. This appliance is a bit of a space hogger though. It's definitely bigger than I expected. I liked that the cord was detachable though. However, my lid and ceramic insert all seemed to be slightly missized and didn't fit into one another perfectly, instead rattling around when ever bumped.

The west Bend 3-Qt. Fondue Post is ideal for enjoying appetizers, simmering a broth to pair with dinner, or for the popular fondue dessert.

I love it! I use it to cook meals with, appetizers (cheeses) and desserts. Once you have your cheese or dessert fondues melted, you will need to turn it off because it gets overly hot and you don't want to burn those items. It works great though and we love using it for everything!

This product is a health hazard. The magnetic plug which sounds like a good idea (greater safety) does not stay connected securely. If you touch the pot or move it ever so slightly the pot looses power and the temperature in the put will fall. I purchased three of these for an event and it was endlessly frustrating to keep the pots connected. At one time I bit into raw chicken because the pot became unconnected and the cooking liquid was only warm instead of hot. Poor design, stay away.

I bought this pot a year ago and have now used it several times.

The positive features:

It holds 3 quarts so it holds enough broth for 4 people to easily cook at the same time.
It has a thermostat.
It is non-stick.
It is easy to clean.
It cooks cheese fondues without scorching****.

The Negatives:

Too big to use for Chocolate Fondue.
The thermostat is very finicky. It is seemingly either boiling or off, but with much fiddling you can get it to keep cheese warm.
The cord constantly falls off.

Overall I think it is worth the money, just be warned it may drive you insane trying to get the temperature to the correct setting, and you will loathe the cord.

If you are in need of a big pot, this is a fair buy. Buy a smaller (1.5 quart) for some appetizer and dessert fondues as this one is way to big.

Looks very nice and sturdy coming out of the box. I liked the idea of the immersible pot for easy cleaning. However, the electrical unit falls off too easily - in fact, the cord is placed so that it knocks itself off. But the worst part is the heat control. Despite Warm, Simmer, and 250 up to 300 degrees, in reality there are two temperatures: hot to the boiling point or OFF. At "Warm," it kept at a constant rolling boil. Basically ruined the fondue and I wasted $13 on cheese, not to mention $40 on the pot.
The instructions were also useless: One section says not to detach the electrical unit until the pot cools. Another says not to move the pot unless the electric unit is detached.
A poorly designed mechanism, and this pot is going back to the store tomorrow.

EXCUSE ME.....PEOPLE...the detachable cord is the best part of the whole thing....!!! It magnetically holds to the leads of the unit..so the cord detaches not allowing the pot to move an inch...which when filled with hot "anything" is one of the best safety features I have ever seen engineeered..So what about if you detach it..if you cant see that it is detached..you certainly don't need to fondue..just stick it back on..Gee whiz!!

Staub La Theiere 1 Quart Round Teapot, Blue

This is a beautifully designed tea pot. Not only can you steep tea in this pot, you can heat your water (or milk, etc.) in it. The design is fantastic and if you care for it properly, like all other cast iron (i.e. wash and dry it as soon as you are done with it) it should last a life time. With all cast iron it really is important to not leave water in it or it will rust.

This is our first piece of Staub. I am generally a big fan of All-Clad and Le Creuset, but when I saw this pot a few years ago, I fell in love with it. We've get the blue one and it really compliments our other kitchen equipment and dishes (Polish pottery with lots of blue).

Here is my experience with Staub "Customer Service" and getting them to honor their warranty. Our teapot started rusting at the edge of the lid within two months of purchase.

I contacted Staub over a month ago and still have not received my replacement teapot. I will not bore you with the numerous interactions between Staub and me but here are some of the excuses I have heard.

1. We are taking year-end inventory and you will need to wait.
2. We are short-handed and got behind because of the Y/E inventory.
3. Staub fired the person that was supposed to handle returns. At least I have an explanation as to why he never returned my phone calls.
4. Today, I received an "admonishment" from Staub that has not even seen the defective teapot.
We only accept returns on teapots once. With your teapot comes a small pamphlet with care and use instructions. If these had been followed, your teapot would not have rusted. Please make sure you follow these instructions, and also remember that this is not a 'TEA KETTLE', but a TEAPOT.

Have you heard enough?

Very nice, sturdy teapot. The cast iron construction maintains heat well, keeping your tea warm for an extended period. Also, it can be heated over a flame, unlike most Japanese style cast iron tetsubin pots, which can not be placed over a flame. I also like the simple, vintage design. The only reason I gave a four was that the teapot I received from Amazon seemed to be a second choice, with sloppy painting and a non-matte finish. However, these defects do not effect its functionality in any way.

This is a Teapot not a Tea kettle. You can both boil your water and brew your tea in this pot because it is cast iron, but the boiling water part is not the point of this teapot. Therefore it does not have a whistle because you are not meant to stick this on the stove and walk away.

Staub teapots follow the Asian Villagers (for example Japanese Tetsubin teapots) way of making tea where you watch the water boil, dump the leaves in and serve from a sturdy cast iron pot that will keep the tea warm for an hour. The cast iron is traditionally meant for a woodstove, stone hearth or firepit. Imagine being by the fire in a cottage in the woods on a crisp fall day, then this would be your pot.

This is an excellent interpretation of the Asian village teapot. It is larger and therefore has many more applications such as making Chai Tea (where you boil the spices and tea), mull wine, apple cider or even make a rich vanilla sauce or warm berry compote for your desert. The round shape is perfect for your whisk and the pouring spout is convenient. It is pretty enough to be brought to the table and the cast iron keeps the sauces warm for round two.

The interior is a dark grey shiny porcelain glaze (not matte as decribed). The cast iron shows through the Sunflower-colored glaze around the spout and makes the pot look a little dirty or unfinished. I would recomend getting this in a darker brighter color to avoid this.

It is also cast in a slightly thinner cast iron than their pots.

It's true this tea pot has no whistle and that it is heavy (it's made of cast iron after all!) It is also true that because it is made of cast iron you must be careful to dry it after using or washing it.

With that said this is the best tea pot I have ever owned or used. This is because the spout is really drip free. Often when I use a teapot I end up spilling hot water at the start or end of the pour. That has never happened with this pot, and I have been using it for two years now.

It is also quite lovely.

Highly recommended for any tea fanatic.
